Co-signer responsibilities

Please be aware that if you co-sign a loan, YOU ARE EQUALLY RESPONSIBLE. If for any reason 1 party can't or won't pay, the other is responsible.

cosigning a loan bears all the financial and legal consequences of taking out the loan yourself. When you cosign, you are signing a contract that makes you responsible for the entire debt. If the other cosigner does not pay, or makes late payments, it will probably show up on your credit record. If the person for whom you cosigned does not pay the loan, the collection company will be entitled to try to collect from you.

If the cosigned loan is reported on your credit report, another lender will view the cosigned account as if it were your own debt. Further, if the information is correct, it will remain on your credit report for up to seven years.

Co-signer responsibilities

Before you co-sign on a car loan for someone it's very important that you understand the responsibilities and the risks involved. It is the responsibility on the Co-Signer to pay on the auto loan if the original signer is unable to. Failure for both parties to pay on the car loan will result in repossession of the car and their credit reports being badly affected. Co-signer should not be confused with Co-Buyer. A co-signer signs the loan contract as a backup. Typical cases of requiring a co-signer are when the signer has little or no credit history or bad credit.

Co-signer responsibilities

Co-signer responsibilities
What is involved?

A family member or friend asks you to co-sign or guarantee a loan: what does this mean and what is required of you? Keep in mind that acting as a co-signer does not mean simply signing your name at the bottom of a contract so that someone can get a loan — there is much more to it!

You are in fact making a commitment to a financial institution to repay the loan if the other party that signed the contract is unable to do so. Carefully consider the circumstances of the friend or family member who is making the request. If the financial institution requires a co-signer, there is undoubtedly a very good reason. Perhaps the financial institution feels this person represents too high a risk. If this person does not meet their payments, a court could issue a judgment requiring you to repay the debt in full. This could adversely affect your credit file as well as your finances.1

Before agreeing to act as a co-signer, ask yourself the following question: can you really afford to repay the entire loan yourself?
