The automatic stay?

Does anyone know what this term means? i've just come across it in an information brochure that isn't very well explained - for me anyway. All I know it's something about creditors calling?? Maybe??

The automatic stay gives the debtor protection from his creditors which means basically they can't harrass you for money once you file.
