Does someone lose their property as soon as they file for bankruptcy?

It all depends on what type of bankruptcy you file and what you declare under it. Some assets are protected, though that is more for ch. 13.

It all depends on what type of bankruptcy you file and In many cases, bankruptcy can be avoided if the habits that lead to one filing bankruptcy are curbed early on in life
