Looking for advice on goodwill letter.

So long story short my friend has a reading/writing disability where he does both rather poorly. Because of this he has depended on others to manage his bills and credit cards all his life. Before we were together he had someone who he though he trusted managing his credit card payments, he found out about 6 months later that the bills were not getting paid and the person was stealing the money. Since this time he is trying to guy a house but his credit is so poor he cannot get approved. The bills have been being paid on time for about a year. I was wondering if sending a 'goodwill' letter to the companies explaining the situation and the steps he has taken to ensure his bills are paid could help his score. Any ideas? Thanks
