Green homes = cost savings

It took a sharp rise in fuel costs, but the economic advantages of greener homes are finally sinking in:

Quote:
Many homeowners are scrambling to pay utility bills and trying to find ways to reduce power consumption. For those considering home improvement projects, there's an abundance of new techniques and products that can be used to create a more energy-efficient home.

New home builders too, are incorporating many innovative methods to reduce the amount of power their buildings consume.

The need just grew even more critical this week after a pipeline leak at Prudhoe Bay took 8 percent of the nation's petroleum-production capacity off line, probably for several months.

With impeccable timing, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) released a report recently outlining the proliferation of new "green" building methods that can help homeowners cut down on energy costs.

It's funny what even little things can do. A solar panel here, an extended awning there, windows on the south side of the house, etc.

My dream house is off the grid and has a rooftop garden.

I would love to have a more eco friendly house. But it cost $$ up front. I know it will save $$ in the end but I am not one to have money any length of time.

Poorgirl, you really can start with little things.

Switch to rechargable batteries and a solar charger ($15-$30 to start). You can take your time with buying new batteries.

Air cleaning plants. You can choose some that increase the humidity in the home.

Compost bin/pile/heap. Reduce your outgoing trash and your usage of trash bags (and the expense) by composting kitchen scraps, yard waste, and occasionally dryer lint or paper.

Line dry your clothing in warm months. Not only will this reduce the energy you are using to dry, it may also reduce your cooling costs.

I remember hearing about how well solar panels can work for some people. If you can afford the whole setup its really great. I know that in California, the power company will actually pay you for any extra power produced.

That's wonderful! I am very supportive of environmentally-friendly buiding materials and energy-efficiency. It is better for everyone in the long run.

Green/renewable energy is good, but that won't save many home owners who overpaid for their homes during the housing bubble years...
